How to DIY Multi-Pin Audio Cables ?

Generally headphones, microphone, music equipment and home entertainment systems require multi-pin connector on the audio cable. For example, when you need to change your current device connectors or cable or connector is damaged, compared to buying a new one, you can choose to link the cable yourself. You do not need to become a master electrician to connect your audio cable. You just need the right tools, some advance planning and some exercises before using the gun, you can accomplish this task themselves.

Getting Started
Prepare the correct type of cable and connector, begin to make your own audio cable. Important tools such as wire strippers, wire cutters, needle-nose pliers and so on. Coaxial cable cutter will make it easier to get a clean cut. In order to protect your hands when welding, you’ll want a small vise or something you can hold the connector. Some techniques to use hot glue gun to protect joints. Such protective measure is in order to avoid electrical short circuit. If your connector kit with heat shrink shrink, you also need a heat gun. Multimeter can test your work.

Connectors
The most common audio connectors is XLR which usually have three pins, it is sometimes more. Microphone connector typically has four pins, while as many as eight audio connectors. Most other audio connector has only one pin, such as RCA connectors, small and submini connectors. Need to know how many pins and pins need to be connected is important. In some cases, the pin is connected to both ends of the same wire. In other cases, the pins need to be connected at one end to a different pin, for receiving the data at the other end. Role pin depends what you are inserted into the connector.

Shielding
Cable shield quality audio is essential. The shield winding wires in the cable sheath and serves two purposes. It protects against an external disturbance signal, and to prevent leakage of electrical signals through the cable. Most audio cables metallic shield foil, typically in the form of woven or spiral. Low frequency audio can also use both braided and spiral shielding. They flexural long life, easy to use, but the metal foil is not robust enough and may be damaged when bent.

Wiring
Color-coded wires can make your own cable. This step is easy to track which colors are connected to both sides of the pin on the cable. Otherwise, you may have to be removed after connecting and testing, re-do it again. When the welding wire connectors, the proper use of solder – just enough to secure the wire. Excess solder can cause a short circuit between the wires or degrade the audio quality. Close the connection, and then connected with a multimeter, if normal, says the project is completed.
